2001 Tim Hortons National Track Championships - Day 3
Courtesy Fiona Morrow - CCA

Edmonton, AB - Spectators were treated to another beautiful day at the Tim Hortons National Track Championships at the Argyll velodrome in Edmonton. The weather and the talent brought out large crowds, as Edmonton's Lori-Ann Muenzer, Steen Madsen and Lars Madsen, to name a few, hit the track.

The morning was dominated by match sprints and individual pursuits. Lori-Ann Muenzer was victorious in the gold medal round against Jenny Trew of team Alberta. In the Senior Men, Steen Madsen was able to secure his first National Sprint title, beating out perennial favourite Doug Baron for the gold. The bronze medal was contested between Juventus club members Paulo Ongaro and Lars Madsen. Ongaro used his years of experience to hold Madsen off in the best 2 of 3 heats.

In the individual pursuits, BC's Mandy Poitras was able to surmount a final burst in the last 150 metres, and closed a 4 bike length gap on Manitoba's Erin Carter, taking the gold.

In the senior women's points race, the gutsy performance of Julia Bradley of Ontario paved the way to gold. Her solo attack early in the race allowed her to lap the field leaving Manitoba's Erin Carter and BC's Mandy Poitras to contest for the silver and bronze.

Mark Ernsting of BC was the class of the field in the men's 48km points race. The repeated attacks of Ernsting consistently placed him in a position to challenge for points. Joining him on the podium with solid performances were Sam Whittingham of BC and Glen Rendall of Ontario.
