Kelso Trails Workshop a Huge Success
Courtesy Dave Seto

Hey Everyone!

Just a short note to thank everybody who helped make the First (hopefully annual) Kelso Trail Building Workshop a huge success.

Thanks to Rich and Jen Edwards of the IMBA Trail Care Crew for making the long trek north to lend us their expertise. We all learned a lot from them, and Kelso now has some sweet new trail, plus some nicely rehabilitated old trail that is a showcase of sustainable trail design and construction.

Thanks to Halton Conservation for hosting the event, with special thanks to Lora Woolner and the staff at Kelso (Awesome lunch Darlene!) for all their support and assistance in setting this workshop into motion, and keeping things rolling.

Thanks to the OCA and several volunteers for providing the tools (and the band-aids for blisters).

Most of all, thanks to everybody who came out to preserve the trails and make them a better place to be. We had a really mixed group of cyclists, hikers, and land managers, and everybody brought some perspective to the discussions on Friday night. Through our collective efforts, we achieved the dual goals of reducing user impact on the ecosystem, and improving accessibility for all users.

For those of you who couldn't make it, here is what you missed:

Friday evening, Jen and Rich Edwards led a seminar to illustrate some of the problems associated with poor trail design, such as rapid erosion, trail widening, and increased user impact. They enlightened us about the design and construction techniques that can be used to ensure the trails are durable and sustainable with minimal maintenance after construction. The neatest aspect of this was how a well designed trail encourages users to stay on the trail, thus reducing their impact on the adjacent areas.

Saturday was spent putting theory into practice. The group split into two, with half building a re-route of a badly eroded section of trail, and the others evaluating some problem areas and laying out another trail re-route around the ancient cedars atop the Kelso bluffs. After lunch, everybody switched, so that we all got to experience both design and construction.
