BMC Houston's Women's Race Cancelled Due to World Cup Conflict

NORRISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA (September 6th, 2001) - The Pro/Elite Women's event at the BMC Software Tour of Houston, set to take place on September 16th, has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict with a Women's World Cup event in the Netherlands, it was announced today.

"It was a hard decision, and one that we would have rather not had to make," said Ravi Rajcoomar, BMC Software Series Event Director. "However, we take great pride in presenting only the highest-caliber competition, and the scheduling issue would have prevented that. We were putting some of the world's top riders in the awkward position of choosing between a Women's World Cup event and our race, and, no matter how it had worked out, it wouldn't have been a good situation for anyone involved, and would have devalued both races."

Saturn's Anna Millward, the current BMC Software Series and Pro Cycling Tour Women's leader, is also at the top of the standings in the Women's World Cup. There are at least four other riders well-placed in both series.

The Women's portion of the BMC Software Series will conclude with the San Rafael Cycling Classic, September 8th in San Rafael, California.

Three CCA Coaches Nominated for the 3M Coaching Awards

Ottawa - Since 1989, many coaches have been honoured for their outstanding contribution to coaching and athlete development with a 3M Coaching Canada Award. This year an unprecedented 97 nominations were received from athletes, officials, parents, and administrators throughout Canada, recognizing the contributions of coaches in their communities and organizations.

Each year, 3M, in collaboration with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC), honours a male and female coach in both high performance and developmental sport. The four winners each receive a $1000.00 coach education bursary and the runners-up in each category receive a $500.00 bursary.

The Canadian Cycling Association is proud to report that three of our National Team coaches have been nominated: Houshang Amiri, Yury Kashirin and Eric Van den Eynde.

Both Houshang Amiri and Yury Kashirin work out of the Pacific Sport Centre in Victoria. Yury is the Centre Head Coach for cycling, and is no stranger to the sport. Yury has won Olympic and World Championships cycling medals, to name a few. He moved from Russia, to Canada in 1993 when he took a job with the Canadian Cycling Association as coach to the junior team and the women's team. When mountain biking became an Olympic event, Yury was appointed National Team coach. With the creation of the first National Cycling Centre in Victoria, BC, Yury became Centre Head Coach for the Pacific Sport Centre. With two jobs on the go, he is busy, but his hard work pays off. Both he and Houshang have turned Canada's mountain bikers into one of the most promising and accomplished teams in the world.

Houshang has already won the prestigious 3M title in 1999. Among other jobs, he has been the National Triathlon Cycling Coach, the BC Track Team Provincial Coach and Head Coach of the Ajax Cycling Club. From 1976 to 1984, Houshang was a member of the Iran National Cycling Team.

Eric Van den Eynde also is no stranger to cycling. He was the track coach at the Montreal Velodrome from 1976 to 1989, the Quebec Provincial Coach for Road and Track from 1984 to 1998, and has been selected by the UCI as the Keirin pacer for World Cup events since 1999. As well, Eric was the coach for the Canadian National Team during: 1996 and 2000 Olympics Games; the 1998 Commonwealth Games; the 1999 Pan-American Games

The winners will be presented with their awards at the Coaching Awards Dinner on October 20th, 2001. Best of luck to our cycling coaches!
