Women's Stage Race - The Transocéane for 2002

Cowansville, Quebec (Canada), October 30th 2001. The International Cycling Union (UCI) has confirmed, the event of the Transocéane, a worldwide women's cycling race, which will be held from September 18th to the 29th of the year 2002. Created from a combination of the Tour International Féminin de Bretagne (TIFB) in France and the Grand Prix féminin international du Québec (Canada), the Transocéane will be the only female stage race held on two continents. The beginning of the race, which counts a total bursary of 53 000 Euros (75 000 CDN dollars), will be given in the region of Brome-Missisquoi in Québec (Canada) where there will be a prologue and five stages, with one start in the United-States. After an air transfer and a day of rest, the next six stages will take place in Brittany (France) by the athletes for the conclusion of this unique sporting event in the history of world cycling. ''We are extremely glad about the dates that the UCI gave us, because the Transocéane is well positioned to become a preparation event for the World Championships. Our race will end 10 days before this event in Belgium. The organization gave all the guaranties to the UCI for them to give us a privileged space in the calendar which is very occupied'', mentioned Jean Lessard, the president of the event.

For Claude Cuny, first vice-president of the Transocéane and president of the TIFB, since we received these key dates we will be a beneficial impact in women's international cycling: '' Our goal is to promote, develop and defend women's cycling and this event, we believe, will do that." The two organizations are joining 20 years of organizing experience, what adds our knowledge concerning the setting-up of women's cycling races.

The Transocéane will welcome 20 teams and the itineraries will be finalized by April 2002. The air transportation and the ground transportation will be assumed by the organization, as well as the housing and the meals during the 12 days of competition

Les dates du 18 au 29 septembre retenues

L'Union cycliste internationale (UCI) a confirmé lundi, la tenue de la Transocéane, épreuve mondiale de cyclisme féminin, qui se tiendra du 18 au 29 septembre 2002. Né d'un jumelage entre le Tour international féminin de Bretagne (TIFB) en France et le Grand Prix féminin international du Québec, la Transocéane constituera la seule course sur route féminine par étapes à se dérouler sur deux continents. Le départ de cette course, qui comptera une bourse totale de 53 000 Euros (75 000 dollars CDN), sera donné dans la région de Brome-Missisquoi au Québec (Canada) afin d'y disputer un prologue et cinq étapes, dont un départ aux États-Unis. Après un transfert aérien et une journée de repos, les athlètes disputeront six (6) étapes en Bretagne (France) pour la conclusion de cet événement sportif sans précédant dans l'histoire du cyclisme mondial. «Nous sommes extrêmement heureux des dates allouées par l'UCI, car la Transocéane est bien positionnée pour devenir un événement préparatoire des Championnats du monde, disputés 10 jours suivant la fin de notre événement en Belgique. Nous avons donné toutes les garanties nécessaires à l'UCI afin qu'ils consentent à nous donner un moment privilégié dans le calendrier qui est déjà fort occupé», de mentionner Jean Lessard, président de l'événement.

Pour Claude Cuny, premier vice-président de la Transocéane et président du TIFB, le fait d'avoir obtenu ces dates-clés aura un impact bénéfique sur le cyclisme féminin international : «Notre but est de promouvoir, développer et défendre le cyclisme féminin qui en a bien besoin et cette épreuve, à notre avis, ne pourra aller que dans ce sens.» Les deux organisations mettent en commun 20 ans d'expérience en organisation, ce qui ajoute au savoir-faire concernant la mise sur pied d'épreuves cyclistes féminines.

La Transocéane pourra accueillir 20 équipes et les parcours seront finalisés d'ici avril 2002. Le transport aérien et terrestre sera assuré par l'organisation, de même que l'hébergement et la restauration tout au long des 12 jours de l'épreuve.
