Team Rona Report

The cat and mouse game upset the Redlands Classic's general classification, which literally exploded today. A surprising stage ended with Judith Arndt (GER, Saturn Timex) wearing yellow, with Canadian Andrea Hannos from Team RONA jumping from 46th to second place, more than 6 minutes behind. Her leader Geneviève Jeanson is third at 7' 37''. Lyne Bessette (CAN, Saturn Timex), fifth of the stage, is now 4th overall, more than 10 minutes behind Arndt. Manon Jutras (CAN, RONA) advances to 7th place in GC.

Today's stage was 131 km-long. With three major climbs, everybody expected another Bessette-Jeanson duel - the whole race was at stake, and not only the stage win.

The girls started in a cool, cloudy weather. " My directives were simple for the initial part of the race", explained RONA's directeur sportif André Aubut. The girls had to keep a good rhythm at the front to prevent any dangerous breakaway. They had to watch Judith Arndt, Petra Rossner (GER, Saturn Timex) and Mari Holden (USA, Cannondale-USA). Geneviève had to cover Lyne Bessette."

Less than eight kilometers from the start, Judith Arndt attacked. Arndt was 2' 27'' behind at GC, and Behind her leader Bessette. Obviously, it was a case of the wearing down tactic, just like the day before. Just like the day before, the pack didn't budge. RONA's Andrea Hannos jumped in Arndt's wheel. The gap grew. "Then I had a tough choice", said Aubut. "Either I asked Geneviève to chase and work like she did yesterday, or I refused to play this little game again. I chose not to play." It was left to Jeanson's teammate Manon Jutras to organize the chase and leave the pack with seven other girls, including Susy Pryde (NZL, TalgoAmerica) and two Cannondale-USA (Lara Ruthven and Dotsie Cowden). They built up a lead on the pack but couldn't catch Arndt and Hannos. "I feel that Manon was left to do more than her share of the work in the chase group", said Aubut.

And so Arndt and Hannos made it together to the bottom of the final climb. With about 10 km to go, they had a 10-minute lead on the chase group, and more than 15 minutes on the peloton, where the two GC leaders, Jeanson and Bessette, could be found - neither of them taking any initiative.

Only then, at the bottom of the long and winding climb, did Jeanson unleash her power. She literally devoured the hill, making up 5 minutes on Arndt in 10 kilometers. But the gap was much too big. Arndt was alone on the finish line, 2'43'' in front of Andrea Hannos. Seven minutes after Hannos, Jeanson, who had passed the whole chase group, finished the stage in a time 15 minutes slower than her winning time last year.

"Of course I'm disappointed that we lost the yellow jersey", Aubut commented after the race, "but I made the decision and I have no regrets. Bottom line, it's not a bad day. We have three girls in the top ten in GC, two of them in a position to be on the podium Sunday. We lead in the team GC. I think we're proving that RONA is a good team, and not limited to Geneviève. Maybe the peloton will understand that neither Geneviève nor RONA will do all the work while everybody else sits back and waits. There must be other girls who can race to win!"
