Ottawa Rider to Race RAAM

This Sunday June 16th 2002, Michael Lau of the Ottawa Bicycle Club will join 16 other male qualifiers in the solo division of the Race Across America, a 5,000km race from the West Coast to the East Coast of the US.

The event begins in Portland, Oregon and finishes in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Racers will have to climb about 30,000 metres, including 55km ride to the top of the Monte Cristo (2,700m) and 27km over Tennessee Pass (3,100m.) Mike is the only Canadian among the eight nationalities represented. Only one Canadian has finished RAAM before. Mike has finished the annual Boston-Montreal-Boston six times - once in the fastest time and once in the second fastest time. He has also finished in the top fastest third of the 1200km Paris-Brest-Paris. In 2001, he was chosen as the Ottawa Bicycle Club's Rider of the Year. Mike will be supported by a crew of nine.
