Canada Cup #3 - Bromont, Quebec Both Melanie McQuaid (Rocky Mountain) and Bill Hurley (Schwinn) solidified their respective leads in the Canada Cup national cross-country race series today - McQuaid by winning her first of the season (after two second places), Hurley by finishing second after two previous wins. The 6 kilometre circuit incorporated portions of the 1992 World Championship course, retaining the crowd pleasing, boulder strewn section just before the Start/Finish, but taking the racers only part way up the main climb before heading into the woods. Our correspondent, Rob Schultz, described the course as „not too technical, no dismounts and plenty of passing opportunities.‰ The women‚s 4 lap race featured the same 5 riders in the top places as last week - just some rearranging in the order. McQuaid took no chances with Melanie Dorion (Scott), who beat her last week. McQuaid led from start to finish, ending up just over a minute in front of Dorion, with Trish Sinclair (Kona) taking her third, third place finish. The 6 lap men‚s race was unfortunately marred by the post-race disqualification of both the second place and third place riders. Geoff Kabush (Kona) took his first Canada Cup win, with a strong ride. However, both of his team mates - Seamus McGrath and Peter Wedge - were DQed for not having their bikes stickered from the mandatory bike check (this was not the officials being nasty - no stickers is an automatic DQ). How both missed the bike check is a mystery, especially for an experienced mountain bike competitor like McGrath (Wedge has some excuse, being new to the sport). Be that as it may, Bill Hurley vaulted into second, with local rider Mathieu Toulouse moving up to third. Ryder Hesjdahl (Kona) won his second consecutive Junior Expert race, with Canada Cup #1 winner, Dustin Adams (Norco) taking second place. We are still waiting for complete results, and will post top three from all categories when they come in. E-mail us for the results of any other rider. Results (Unofficial) Elite Men 1.
