Update From Europe
We just finished talking with national coach Jacques Landry about the Espoir and Junior projects underway in France and Belgium.
Espoirs
As previously reported, Jean-François Laroche managed to move up from fourth to third overall in the final stage of the Tour Seine-et-Marne, in France. It was a two stage day, with a road race in the morning and a time trial in the afternoon. In the 95 km morning stage (Combs-la-Ville to Ecuelles), a break of three got clear, gaining up to a minute and a half, which threatened Laroche's overall standing. So, Canada, the Dutch national squad and Rabobank all went to the front and brought it back together with 20 km to go. The field split after this, with Laroche making the front group and finishing fourth. Kenny Van Hummel (Rabobank) won the stage.
In the final 20 km time trial (held in Souppes), Laroche had "one of the best ITT rides of his career" to finish third on the stage and move into third overall. Niels Scheunemann (Rabobank) won the stage and the overall in 26:01, with Laroche 32 seconds back on the stage. Scheunemann jumped into first on GC, ahead of team mate (and former leader) Pieter Weening by 10 seconds, and in front of Laroche by 13 seconds. There were no other Canadians in the top 20.
Other Espoir notes:
- Ryder Hesjedal went down hard in the first stage of Seine-et-Marne, while he and Laroche were in a break. Apparently, Hesjedal had just finished his turn at the front and pulled off when someone ran into him, knocking him off his bike. In addition to road rash on his ankle, hip and arm, he was hit in the ribs by another bike. This is causing the majority of problems right now, since he is still very stiff and sore. A decision will be made on Wednesday as to whether his recovery is good enough for Paris-Tours and the Worlds
- François Parisien went down earlier in the project during a training ride, when a gust of wind knocked him into a ditch. The full impact of his fall was borne by his left wrist, damaging the ligament. A decision was made that he should end his season, rather then risk further injury.
- Overall, Jacques says that the guys are riding well, and that their morale is good (especially since the weather has remained good). Right now, the team is in Paris, resting up and training for the Paris-Tours next Sunday - the final Worlds selection race.
Juniors
The Junior men just finished a 2 day stage race in Belgium. Top results were a 23rd in the second stage time trial by Cam Evans (B.C.), and a stage 3 finish with the front group by Cabrel Boucher (Manitoba). "The guys at this point are lacking some tactical skills, so they are missing the breaks. Their physical conditioning is fine, and the other knowledge they will learn. They still have two more races before the Worlds." said Jacques Landry.

Correction
As has been pointed out, the Atlas Cold Storage-Ital Pasta press release regarding Simon Small's positive result for ephedrine (see: September 24/02 10:30 am EDT - Atlas Cold Storage/Italpasta Press Release) was incorrect in the level found. It should have read 11 µg/ml, NOT 0.11 . Also, the allowable limit is 10 µg/ml, not 0.10 . We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
