Report From Women's World Cup in Plouay

Sue Palmer-Komar was good enough to give us a call after her eighth place finish at the women's World Cup race in Plouay, France.

"It was hard, especially since I only got here the day before the race, after finding out on Monday that I would be doing it! The course was exactly the same as the Worlds, with 2 climbs per lap. The first one was a kilometre after the (start/finish) line; it was a gradual climb that increased to medium steepness, that wasn't too tough. After a little kicker hill 1 kilometre later we did the second climb, and it was the hardest. It was 1 kilometre long, with a flase flat at the top.

People would go hard on the second climb, but it would come back together every lap. Rossner was coming off every lap, but she would come back up; a lot of people did. Nothing really happened until the last lap, when Dede (Demet-Barry) attacked really hard on the first climb. She got a good gap and I thought she might stay away, but she was caught at the bottom of the second climb.

After Dede was caught, (Mirjam) Melchers was just hammering all the way up the climb, breaking it up, but Petra (Rossner) dug really deep and stayed with us. Then Simone Parenti attacked just over the top and got a gap on us chasers. Judith (Arndt, Rossner's Saturn teammate) wasn't with us, and Petra was getting dropped, but then Judith came right to the front and pulled us all up. We caught her (Parenti) with 400m to go. Then the sprinters started setting up and I just stayed with the group.

I was pretty happy with my ride. When the race started, I thought 'What am I doing here?' But then I started to feel better through the race, and my legs came around."
