Shelly's Drive for the Ride for Heart

Shelley Gautier (34) sustained a severe head injury two years ago after a serious mountain biking accident. Her accident caused a brain injury and left her paralyzed on the right side of her body. On June 1, Shelley is riding in the Becel Ride for Heart to help bring awareness to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and to raise money for the cause.

Shelley has a passion for biking and an obvious vested interest in supporting neuroscience research. As evidence of this, she is attempting to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation by riding the 25 km loop in the Ride for Heart.

Today, Shelley is back on her bike, modified for her needs, and she is able to ride again thanks to the advancements of therapy. Through hard work and perseverance, Shelley is also able to walk and maintain quite an independent lifestyle. However, as bicycle accidents make up a significant proportion of overall head injuries, her focus has now turned to raising money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Last year Shelley managed to complete the 25km loop in three hours and forty-five minutes and she raised just under $2,000. Currently, she is training everyday and is hoping this year to do the race in better time. Shelley is working hard to canvass for pledges and is hoping to exceed her previous amount.

The Becel Ride for Heart is Canada's largest charity cycling and in-line skating event in support of life-saving heart disease and stroke research. This year, hopes are set high, as the foundation plans to raise $1.45 million. More than 14,000 are expected to skate or ride, so make sure you are one of them supporting this worthy cause.

Ride or skate by yourself, with your family, or as a corporate team and partake in some friendly competition.

Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary will all hold rides on June 1st.
