First annual Stanley Park Bike Festival answers call for more fun in Vancouver

On June 15, Vancouver will get the fun we've all been waiting for with the first annual Stanley Park Bike Festival, a day of cycling activities for all ages, fitness levels and backgrounds.

The Stanley Park Bike Festival celebrates cycling for sport, fun and fitness, while promoting cycling as an alternative transportation option, and addressing public concerns around pollution and global warming. The event is also home to the Brockton Criterium bike race.

"Vancouver has never had a festival devoted exclusively to cycling and people-powered transportation, and so we're delighted to be the first," said Alistair Barrett, event founder and co-organizer. "The Stanley Park Bike Festival brings athletes, cycling advocates and families together for some great two-wheeled fun."

Activities for kids include a Bike Safety Rodeo, Treasure Hunt, and Kids' Race for 4-7 year olds and 8-12 year olds. Also offered are bike maintenance and traffic skills workshops, a commuter challenge relay, road and trail rides, and on-site stunt riding entertainment.

"The Stanley Park Bike Festival will be an opportunity for everyone, regardless of their cycling abilities, to learn bike know-how and bike safety," said Vancouver City Councillor Raymond Louie. Louie is an avid cyclist who has long advocated for a cycling festival in Vancouver, and will be on-hand for the festival.

To support the festival's goal of promoting transportation alternatives, the Vancouver Parks Board has declared Brockton Point as a "car-free zone" between 7:00 am and 12:00 noon. To reach the festival at the Totems at Brockton Point, visitors are encouraged to bike, ride transit, in-line skate, or walk. The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC) will be leading group rides from various locations in Greater Vancouver. Parking is available in other areas of Stanley Park and the West End for those who must drive.

"Choosing cycling as a transportation alternative goes hand-in-hand with our efforts to promote alternatives to single occupant auto use," said Helen Cook, program manager for TransLink, the festival's principal sponsor. "TransLink offers a range of services to accommodate cyclists, including bike racks on some buses, bike lockers at SkyTrain stations, and a pilot allowing bikes on SkyTrain weekdays during off-peak hours and all day weekends."

Free activities for families and cyclists of all ages are planned. Cyclists wishing to compete in the Brockton Criterium race must register and pay a registration fee. Details about festival events and race registration can be found at the festival web site. To plan a transit trip to the festival, visit the TransLink web site or call 604-953-3333.
