OCA Volunteers Needed

Want to help improve or expand the sport of cycling? How about donating some of your time and expertise to the OCA, it's committees and events? So much more could be done with more bodies, hands and ideas. Volunteer for a committee (Development, High Performance, Recreation, for example) accept a position on the Board (Vice Presidents of Finance, Recreation and Development will be elected in March), help us operate our Bingo sessions (which raises over $40,000) for Junior and Youth programs), write for the web, newsletters and handbook, help out at the Bike show (answering questions from new and returning members), or spend a few hours in the OCA office - there's always something to be done!

Contact Steve at smerker@ontariocycling.org to make a difference in YOUR association!

Sport IS Development Fund

The OCA is taking advantage of a program offered through the Sport Alliance of Ontario - the Sport IS Development Fund. Through the Sport IS Fund, the OCA is able to accept charitable donations and issue income tax receipts for individuals wishing to make this type of contribution.

We are currently accepting donations for the Pursuing the Podium project, a means of providing extra funds to the two National Training Centres in Ontario. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to Hardwood Hills National Cycling Centre, or to the McMaster Training Group and Developing National Cycling Centre, please contact Steve Merker at 416 426-7243, or smerker@ontariocycling.org.

Donations may also be made to the BMX Riders Ready program, the same program that had a number of bikes stolen earlier this year. To date over $18,000 has been received for the program, which helps kids with medical problems or disabilities enjoy the thrill of cycling and especially BMX. Again, contact Steve for details.

2003-2004 Athlete-Coach Subsidy Program

25 athletes will receive funding from the OCA in 2003-2004.OCA "Cards" are used to subsidize the costs of coaching for athletes who meet specific criteria each year - by winning Provincials or the Ontario Cup Series, or by meeting standards at Nationals for example. The athletes select their coaches, who must be OCA Licensed and NCCP certified - the higher the certification, the higher the subsidy, to a maximum of $85 per month. A total of nine coaches are working within this program.

Criteria for next season, 2004-2005 will be posted once it is finalized, probably early December. Check out the OCA in the coming weeks for profiles of Ontario carded athletes.
