Olympic Road Quotas Announced
With files from CCA and UCI
May 6, 2004 - The CCA is pleased to announce that it has received confirmation of places for the upcoming 2004 Olympic Games of Road cycling. In view of UCI rankings by nations and individuals established on the 30th of April 2004 and according to UCI rules, the UCI has confirmed Canada's presence for the Road events.
The CCA is happy to announce that it will field a minimum of 3 men athletes and 3 women athletes for the following events:
- Men's Elite Road Race - August 14th, 2004: 3 places
- Women's Elite Road Race - August 15th, 2004: 3 places
- Women's Elite Time Trial - August 18th, 2004: 2 places
Only the athletes who take part in the road race can take part in the individual Time Trial. Canada did not receive any men's time trial spots, since it is not ranked in the top 25 nations, however, there is the possibility of receiving a spot if a nation does not use all of its allotment (Eric Wohlberg received a spot in this way at Sydney in 2000).
There will be a maximum of 145 men (including 40 for the time trial) and 67 women (25 for the time trial) for the road events. Below is the complete breakdown of Olympic road spots, by nation.
Canada was previously alloted 5 spots (3 women, 2 men) for mountain biking. Track spots will not be alloted until after the Track Worlds this month.
