Max Van Heeswijk (US Postal Service) showed the kind of form he enjoyed in February-March of this year, by taking the opening race of the 2004 Wachovia series in Lancaster, PA earlier this evening. The 91-mile downtown circuit course is always a challenge, and even more so this year as the skies opened up to drench the course as the riders prepared for their 4:30pm start. Although the rain stopped just as the race started, the roads remained wet for the first several laps of the race. Apparently the slick conditions didn't hamper the riders as the first lap was rumored to be the fastest lap ever recorded on this tough-guy course.
The early action saw many attacks and the Healthnet squad was particularly active in the early going. The first serious attack came at the half-way point as Navigators Insurance's David McKenzie escaped with an on-form Ivan Dominguez (Colavita). The pair of tough guys gained :40 on the field until a chasing group of 4 made it across to make it 6 away. Included in the bridging group were Chris Baldwin (Navigators Insurance), Gordon McCauley (Monex), Adam Bergman (Jelly Belly) and Jason McCartney (Healthnet). The motivation level remained high amongst the leaders, but their lead only grew to just under 1-minute, with about 30-miles remaining in the race. The US Postal squad mounted the only organized chase and brought the leaders back into the fold as the lap-counter showed 3-to-go.
The demanding and unforgiving course caused serious damage to the peloton and the group was now down to about 50 riders. As the finish loomed, it was apparent that a group sprint might be in order for the day. Bobby Julich (CSC) thought otherwise and went on the attack in a solo move that netted him a 0:30 advantage with just over 1-lap to go, but he too was brought back. Van Heeswijk countered and was able to hold off the chasing peloton to finish alone by 0:20, with Francisco Ventoso (Saunier Duval) and Fred Rodriguez (Acqua & Sapone) finishing out the podium. Navigators' Ciaran Power was 4th in the group, giving him 5th place in the race.
