Tough course, close finishes and hard racing marks Red Mud VIII

New Brunswick's Jamie Lamb gets the gold

New Brunswick's Jamie Lamb, racing for the Kona/Cyclesmith team, took home an easy victory Sunday at Brookvale Ski Park during the Atlantic mountain biking championships.

Racing in the Open Elite category, Lamb decisively won the race almost eight minutes ahead of his nearest competitor, PEI's Andrew Brown (DalvayByTheSea/TaylorsGarage). PEI's Mark Grimmett (DalvayByTheSea/TaylorsGarage) placed third.

The real story at the annual Red Mud Mayhem Mountain Bike Race, however, was Ryan Taylor's fourth place finish. The DalvayByTheSea/Taylors Garage, PEI-based rider rode a fixed gear, single-speed bike for the race's duration, meaning he had only one gear available to him for the entire race.

Even so, Taylor still managed to place only two minutes out of third place and hold off the rest of the pack over five laps of the hilly, nine-kilometre course.

New Brunswick's Lisa Anne Frigault (Mike's Bike Shop) captured first place in Open Elite Female with a comfortable lead of almost three minutes over Nova Scotia's Lisa Mcinnis, racing for Hub Cycle Spokebenders. Kathleen Pistak of New Brunswick grabbed third.

A number of extremely close races made for an exciting Atlantic Championship this year. Down-to-the-wire finishes included Nova Scotia's Scott Bonnell, racing for Valley Stove and Cycle, beating PEI's Ben Crook-Hanna (Smooth Cycle) by 54 seconds in the Open Expert Male (17-39) category; a 50-second difference between first-place finisher Etienne LeBlanc of Quebec (Baie-des-Chaleurs) and independent rider Roy Daniel from New Brunswick in the Under 17 Expert/Junior Sport Male category; and a 15-second gap between two New Brunswick riders in the Under 15 Male category, first-place cyclist Jonathan Daigle riding for Ski Wolf and Marc Petrie (Club Cycliste de la Peninsule).

As if that wasn't close enough, the tightest race of the day occurred in the Master Sport 40+ category when independent racer Kenneth Gauthier edged PEI Rigid Rider Charles Mandel by 10 seconds to capture first place.

Island racers had better luck in Saturday's short track event with DalvayByTheSea/TaylorsGarage riders Mark Grimmett and Andrew Brown finishing first and second respectively over New Brunswick's David Olscamp riding for Team McDonalds.

About 150 racers from across the Maritimes participated in the championships.
