The 2004 Alberta Hill Climb Time Trial Championship took place Sunday (September19th) at Mount Norquay in Banff National Park. Fair but cool weather brought out 87 competitors ranging in age from 16 to 76 years in age. The times weren't the fastest seen in recent years for all categories, but three new course records were set.

John Bereczki recorded a new time for the Paralympic Category at 21m14.0s. Newcomer to Alberta cycling, Neal Stoughton, recorded a time of 15m19.7s for the Masters 50-59 Category, a full 1m07s faster than the previous record set in 1994. And Danielle Kabush, riding for Gears Cycling Team out of BC set the new Women's record at 15m37.6s, over 40s faster than the prevous record on the same course. The fastest time of the day was made by Scott Manktelow, the new Men's Albert Hill Climb Champion, at 14m01.5s.

Well done to all the new provincial medalists and athletes competing Sunday.

Blizzard Bike Club Fort St. John, BC

Sept. 19th

Pat Ferris used a snowy, difficult course to his advantage to win the 10th annual Dawntech Mountain Bike Championships, Sunday. He won a difficult 5-lap event with a time of 37:32 minutes. Gary Hilderman was second at 38:58 and Rod Lewis third at 43:52.

Conditions were grim, to say the least. Riders had to contend with numerous trees blown across the Beatton park trail as well as several inches of wet, sloppy snow. Riders had to run and carry their bikes as well as ride what they could.

Adam Currie had 45:38 for 4 laps. Sam Keats won the three-lap event with 28:56. Ken Nix did 19:05 and Barb Polehoykie 28:10 for two laps.

The last time there was snow for the club mountain bike championships was in the year 2000, which is also the last time Pat Ferris won the Club off-road Championship. Ferris joins Kris St. Jean as the only riders to have won this title, twice.

Coming up:
- Race of the Falling Leaves trophy event, next Sunday, from the Montney Store at 2:00 pm. This is a 50 km event with a 25 km distance available, as well.
