Victoria Cycling League

Another year of exciting cycling action has concluded in Victoria, BC. Our first race was held way back on March 14.

The racing season saw total domination by our two winners.

A group was won by Chuck Dethridge of Sidney Velo. Chuck's determined focus ensured he would win the Victoria Cycling League Championships. In the B group, Robin Gwynne was a consistent finisher with several high placings to his credit. In the women's category it seemed that who ever was the most consistent would be our eventual winner. Well done Micheline Ouimet and Heidi Morrison.

2004 also saw a new competition: The Victoria Hill Climb Championships. Riders participating in this competition had to ride up three challenging hills, with one event each week in September. Congratulations goes out to Daniel Goncalves our Victoria Hill Climb Champion.

Stay tuned for details on the Victoria Cycling League's annual awards dinner. All the final results will soon be posted at www.schwalbecycling.com.

Mike Hientzman won the first cyclo-cross series event of the year, Thursday night, with a time of 25:44 minutes for 10 laps of the Beatton River circuit. Pat Ferris was 50 seconds back in second place. Wim Kok third at 29:53.

Pat Ferris and defending 2003 series champion Mike Heintzman stayed together, exchanging leads for the first three laps. Mike sprinted by Ferris on the paved portion to get the lead for keeps.

Sam Keats was fourth at 32:12 and Barb Polehoykie fifth at 33:44.

Cyclo cross is an on-road, off road event done with road or mountain bikes. Each lap contains a quarter of gravel, pavement, grass or running carrying your bike.

Sunday is Cyclo Cross #2.
