March 6/05 1:25 am - McLane Pacific Classic: Fraser Wins

McLane Pacific Classic Merced, CA
Reports Coutesy Quark Cycling and Health Net Pro Cycling Team

The Quark Cycling team assembled in Northern California to start the 2005 NRC season with a 32 mile criterium; The McLane Pacific Downtown Grand Prix. On hand to contest the opening event on the American Calendar were teams from Webcor Builders, Victory Brewing, T-Mobile, and Subway, along with Quark Team members, Annette Beutler (SUI), Audrey Lemieux (CAN), Candice Blickem (USA), Grace Fleury (USA) and former overall NRC champion Laura Van Gilder (USA).

From the gun it was apparent that the cold, rain and snow of the past winter had not kept the women that comprise the North American peloton from training, as the racing was fast and very aggressive. Both the T- Mobile squad and the Victory Brewing Team launched repeated attacks in order to get a break away but nothing was able to stay away for more then a lap or two. With five laps to go both the Quark and the T-Mobile team took over the front for their respective sprinters as it became apparent that the race would come down to a drag race amongst the top sprinters.

Quark's Laura Van Gilder led through the final turn before the finish and punched it hard but T-Mobile's Ina-Yoko Teutenberg was able to come by her to take the first NRC win of the season. Victory Brewing's super sprinter Gina Grain took third. The ladies take on the 2nd half of the McLane Bicycle Classic; the 72 mile long Foothills Road Race on Sunday.

It’s becoming a very familiar site: Gord Fraser of the Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis crossing the finish line of the McLane Pacific Downtown Grand Prix, arms raised in victory. This afternoon, under sunny skies, Fraser won his fourth consecutive Downtown GP.

The 50-lap race didn’t really get interesting until the final 12 laps, when Colavita-Sutter Home massed its troops at the front to try to control the end of the race. But with three to go, several Health Net Presented by Maxxis riders began to infiltrate the bunch.

“Colavita had a lot of guys up there,” Fraser said, “but we have so much experience with (John) Lieswyn, (Mike) Sayers, (Chris) Wherry and Ivan (Dominguez), and we had some good work from Doug Ollerenshaw, too.”

Going into the first turn of the last lap, Wherry and Sayers pulled Fraser and Dominguez up to the front on the inside. “We were patient until a lap to go,” Fraser said. “We wanted to wait as late as possible and not be the first team to commit. We pretty much overpowered them on the last lap.”

A minute later, Fraser crossed the line ahead of J.J. Haedo and Sebastian Alexander of Colavita. After finishing his lead-out, Dominguez held on for 5th place. “I felt good in the sprint,” Fraser said. “It’s good to start the NRC with win.”

Sunday, Health Net Presented by Maxxis is back in action at the McLane Pacific Foothills Road Race, which Fraser also won in 2004.
