2005 Yaletown Grand Prix has the Fireworks Ready
A New Canada Day Tradition Begins
June 29th, 2005. Vancouver, BC. The Fireworks will start early this Canada Day. With a strong field and improved course layout, the second edition of the Yaletown Grand Prix is set to bring high level bike racing back to the historic streets of Canada's hottest neighbourhood on July 1st.
The confirmed field so far includes two-time World Champion Roland Green (Team Kona Les Gets), who has been ascendant in his 2005 return to racing after two years lost to injury in 2003/2004. Lining up next to him will be 2004 Yaletown Grand Prix Champion Svein Tuft (Symmetrics Cyclng). Svein is coming off a second place overall against an international field at the Tour de Beauce and has been in crushing form all season. The last time they met, at the Bastion Square Criterium in Victoria BC, Roland overcame the entire Symmetrics team and ended up beating Tuft by half a wheel in a late two-man break. On Friday, we'll find out if it is revenge, repeat or someone else's time to shine.
The women's field features three-time World Champion and Olympic Medallist Alison Sydor (Team Rocky Mountain Business Objects). With less emphasis on European travel this year, Alison has been a regular in road races around British Columbia and currently sits second in the BC Cup Overall standings. However, the odds-on favourite to repeat her 2004 Yaletown Grand Prix Championships is surely double Israeli National Champion Leah Goldstein (Trek Red Truck Racing). After a broken hand kept her from Olympic qualification last year, Goldstein has been dominant all year in the Pacific Northwest winning nearly everything in site including a recent victory in the Mt. Hood Classic stage race which included wins in three of the five stages. There will be a big bullseye on her back come July 1st.
The Yaletown Grand Prix offers an unparalleled venue for all this racing. The redesigned race course not only provides better action with a winding high speed pass along Pacific Boulevard, but it will also use the full length of Yaletown's Mainland Street main drag. The natural elevated viewpoints along Mainland's converted loading docks and the many summer restaurant and bar patios of this former warehouse district make for an ideal spectator venue.
