The first event on Sunday was the ITT. This was a 1km course, just one way. Because we did not have complete access to the road safety was a concern. The women went first with the following results:

Amanda Kellett 1m 27.43s
Stephanie Tarlton 1m 39.98s

The men's race was quite exciting. The start order was based on reverse order of finish in the Mountain Bike Race, so the two racers who dropped out of the XC went first. Most people though that they would be our winners being that everyone else was using a Mountain Bike (although modification of parts was allowed). Charlie and Chris held 1st & 2nd for most of the race. A lot of the racers only changed their tires to slicks and left their shocks on so they had a weight penalty added to their lack of experience. Finally near the end of the field Peter Sanowar broke their time, but this was short lived when Ryan Schonauer beat time for the final winning time of 1m 15.10s. Here are the top 5:

Ryan Schonauer 1m 15.10s
Peter Sanowar 1m 15.24s
Loic Ransom 1m 19.26s
Andrew Watson 1m 20.64s
Michael Hendricken 1m 20.75s

After the ITT the racers had a break before they were to start the Road Race. This was held on an 8km circuit with the racers completing 4 laps. Once the race started it was quite evident that most of the Mountain Bikers did not have any road racing experience. There was a main pack of about 20 who managed to keep together most of the race and the rest broke down into smaller groups. There was some frustration expressed by the racers with road experience because the other racers did not know how to pull, hold a line, chase.... In the end Charlie Gorman took the lead and blew the rest of the field away by 2 minutes with a winning time of 52m 53s. Here are the top 5 men and the women's results:

Men
Charlie Gorman 52m 53s
Peter Sanowar 54m 52s
Ryan Schonauer S.T.
Chris Reid S.T.
Rod Smit S.T.

Women
Amanda Kellett 58m 46s
Stephanie Tarlton 1h 16m 37s

An overall GC was also awarded:

Men
Ryan Schonauer 1st
Peter Sanowar 2nd
Michael Hendricken 3rd

Women
Amanda Kellett 1st
Stephanie Tarlton 2nd

Watch out for these racers because they are our next up and coming stars.

NOVICE EVENT # 15
DATE: August17th 1998
DISTANCE: 37.2 KM CRITERIUM
WEATHER: overcast, strong NW wind , 27 C
Average speed : 38.9 kph

This 8 lap event was held on a 4.4 km circuit which used both sides of Explorer Drive and two dead turns. The riders liked it, despite the strong northwest wind but the less experienced ones had difficulty at the turns and had to do a lot of extra work to catch up. The team leaders, including Marcus Peron, did a great job in keeping the race together and all four primes were hotly contested. No-one was lapped - a first fo the novice races, and the general standard of riding (and the average speed ) both improved.
