MISSISSAUGA MIDWEEK SERIES

EVENT # 17 55 KM HANDICAP CRITERIUM
DATE August19th.
WEATHER: Sunny, 23 C., medium SE wind.
Speed 43.94 kph

The handicap group in tonight's race started 90 seconds ahead of the scratchers but were caught by a three man break that included Yann Blindert (Saeco). The rest of the sctratch bunch were only 8 seconds behind and, by the end of lap seven, all 70 starters were in one, big pack. Within two laps, a strong ten man break formed, including all the top nine finishers.

There were constant attempts to bridge, notably, from Brian Taborek (Allsport), and Heath Cockburn (Jet Fuel), but most of the pack were in no mood to work and the break, only half of whom seemed to be really pulling stayed about 30 seconds up.. For the latter part of the race series leader Greg Cavanagh (Woodstock) and second placed Cockburn sat near the back watching each other with Heath showing his frustration by gesturing to the spectators.

Finally, with only three laps to go, the bunch stirred into action and almost managed to haul in the break, with Cockburn managing to bridge and snatch tenth place, moving him one point closer to Cavanagh. Ahead of him Dave Fry (Hummingbirds) took the flag for a well-earned first win in the series, just edging supervet Don Zuck (Pavan). Evian Missisauga's Michael Moore claimed a surprising third place just ahead of Saeco Canada's Yann Blindert.

Honorable mention should go to Racer Sportif's mighty Minime Jose Estavez who managed to finish halfway up the main pack. Look for great things from this talented young rider.

Next week's events will both start at 7.00 p.m. prompt. Monday's novice race will still be 33 km, but the Wednesday criterium will be 5o km. Further information from Peter McC at (905) 271-8300 email peter.mac @sympatio.ca
