First Atlantic Canadian Singlespeed Championships to be held in PEI

Attention singlespeeders and all mountain bike racers: The Paul Components Atlantic Canadian Singlespeed Championships will be held at Brookvale PEI on Sunday, August 28th as part of Red Mud 9, the Island's mountain bike festival. Events begin on August 27th with short track, and continue on the 28th with XC racing for all categories, and the Singlespeed Championships. This summer has seen a bizarre growth of singlespeeders on the Island, so the competition should be fast and funky. We also have some great prizes from Paul Components, Surly, Tioga and Kona.

The local Blizzard squad put on a good showing at Grande Prairie's Challenge Cup road race, Sunday, getting 57 points to Dawson Creeks 14 and GP's 6. The Blizzards also put two riders on the podium!

Pat Ferris was the race winner, as well as picking up three bonus points for the tough 50 km Å’three hills' road race, with a time of 1:44:07 hours. Dawson Creek's Carsten Erbe was second at 1:44:54 and Bob Andrews (FSJ) was third at 1:48:43.

Seven riders started out for the 50 km road race, in the rain. The pack stayed together for the Highway 40 section, to the bottom of the Grovedale hill. The pack blew apart on the steep hill as Pat Ferris forced the pace with Carsten Erbe in hot pursuit. Ferris and Erbe got together after the top of the hill until the bottom of the final Wapiti River hill.

Pat Ferris pulled away at the bottom of the Wapiti hill to win by a margin of 47 seconds. Bob Andrews got third at 1:48:43 and Gary Hilderman (FJ) 4th at 1:48:48. Ken Perry (GP) put in an excellent ride for 5th at 1:49:07. Ken Nix was 6th at 1:56:40 and Mark Sevier (DC) 7th at 2:05:40.

Pat Andrews did 1:21:10 for 1 laps; Adam Bilodeau had 50:30 and Hilda Bilodeau 51:30 for the 2 lap. Jolea Bilodeau had 1:08:30 for 3 laps. Steve Sparling had 1:21:00 and Matt Sparling 1:21:10 for the 4 lap event.
