Bessette Wins in Sterling

For the fourth time in 2005, Team Cyclocrossworld.com-Louis Garneau's Tim Johnson and Lyne Bessette tallied a matching set of wins in a major cyclocross race. Tim and Lyne won their respective races in a snowy Gearworks Bay State Cyclocross, Saturday, November 26th in Sterling, Mass. The wins solidified Tim and Lyne's positions as leaders of the 2005 Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series.

After having stretched her legs in the B Men's race, in which she finished third, Lyne tore apart the Elite Women's race with her trademark fast start. On a course made slick with four inches of snow, Lyne danced away from the strung out pack of chasers, smoothly negotiating the icy twists and turns. Not even a last-lap crash could slow down the Canadian champion whose next race will be on the World Cup circuit in Italy.

"It was really good to race with the men," said Lyne, who leaves next Thursday for the unveiling of new road team, the T-Mobile Pro Women's Team, in Munich. "I can go through corners about the same as they can, but they have much more power on the straightaways, so keeping up with them takes a lot for me and that's good. I don't always get that challenge in the women's race so this was a good experiment. Most of the girls I race over here have full-time jobs and since I race full-time it's not quite the same. When I get to Europe I know what kind of racing I'll be facing, so this kind of day is good for me."

Taking full advantage of the wintry conditions, Tim grabbed the lead in the Elite Men's race mid-way through the second lap and never looked back. While Mark McCormack (Team Clif Bar) gave chase and got within a handful of seconds of catching him, Tim found a little extra speed in the closing lap to nail down his second big snow day win of 2005.

"I was definitely hurting there for a few laps," said Tim. "Obviously I love this kind of riding and racing, it's a lot of fun and I seem to be able to go fast in it. I saved a little bit because I know Mark likes to come back at the end of races, so when he got to within 6 seconds I just put my head down and concentrated on riding clean and going fast. I hope the weather's like this for Nationals, because I think it's the only way I can beat guys like Ryan Trebon and Jonathan Page."

Tim continues his preparation for Nationals with the New England Series, December 3-4 in Rhode Island, while and Lyne makes her World Cup debut December 8th in Milan, Italy.
