Brooke Miller's win at the Downtown Walterboro Criterium Wednesday (April 29th) evening may not have been as seamless as her win at Athens Saturday, but it was equally as impressive.
"The girls had to do some quick thinking and improvising at the end of the race," said team directeur sportif Jeff Corbett. "We had the train set up but they got swarmed by Colavita."
This forced Meredith Miller to the front too early, "and she ran out of speed before we had planned," Corbett said.
Joanne Kiesanowski recognized the situation and took over. "Jo stepped up and delivered Brooke to the last corner with a daring dive to the inside of the Colavita train in corner three," Corbett explained. "She blasted out of corner four with Broke in tow and delivered her perfectly."
Brooke put in her patented finishing burst to seal the win ahead of her Crits Week nemesis, Tina Pic (Colavita/Sutter Home), while Kiesanowski kept on pushing to earn a much-deserved 3rd place.
"Everyone was aggressive and worked well," Corbett said. "Emma (Rickards) covered a lot of moves and even Ali Rosenthal, still covered in bandages, fought her way to the front to help out."
Rosenthal was part of a mid-race pile-up in Dana Point, CA on Sunday that also took down teammate Rushlee Buchanan, who sustained a broken wrist. Rosenthal escaped with road rash and bruising, and is still feeling the effects of the crash.
