London's Forest City Velodrome has just let us know that they are continuing their elite women's development program for a third year, with assistance from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and private donors.
The program offers cadet, junior, and elite women an opportunity to try the track out at no cost. Those who remain interested and show potential after a trial period receive $500 towards the purchase of a track bike and ongoing assistance with the costs of equipment and travel to competitive events.
In October 2009 the program renews for 2010 and will consider latecomer applications if funds remain. Women that are interested are welcome to come to the track in October on Saturdays at 2pm, but should apply in advance to forestcityvelodrome@live.com. The trial period is two months during which time the Velodrome would like to see applicants at the track 2-3 times a week.
"The women's development program has been very successful," reports Lisa Perlmutter. "Many of the women who were recruited through this program have gone on to earn medals at the Canadian Track Nationals. This year we hope to recruit more women to come out and try track riding and ultimately join in the training and racing program available at the Forest City Velodrome."
2008 Ontario Elite Track team members include Amy Biskaborn, Heather Logan, Lisa Perlmutter, Amy Armstrong, and Dina Ridha; see attached photo.
