Canada Games Council
The Canada Games Council is the national governing body and franchise holder for the Canada Games and Canada Games Movement. Held every two years, alternating between summer and winter, the Canada Games are a key event in the developing years of Canada’s young athletes. Since the first Games in Quebec City in 1967, over 100,000 athletes have participated in the Games with hundreds of thousands having engaged in try-outs and qualifying events.
Over 150,000 coaches, officials and volunteers have been involved in planning and staging the events over the last 40 years. The Council is proud of the Games’ contribution to Canada’s sport development system and to lasting legacies of sport facilities, community pride and national unity. The next sets of Games are scheduled for: 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia and the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
The Canada Games Council is seeking an energetic and passionate individual to join our staff team as the Sport and Games Coordinator. He/She will provide support in the areas of sport development and games transfer of knowledge.
The Coordinator will take the lead on the following:
Implementing a transfer of knowledge plan to Host Societies, (including the creation of tools, resources, compiling “best practices”, policies, procedures, and Core Plans where appropriate) in the below functional areas:
- Volunteers
- Registration and Accreditation
- Sport Operations (shared lead)
- Signage, Pageantry & Fabrication
- Security
- Transportation (Internal)
- Materials Management
- Telecommunications
- Results, Timing, and Scoring
- IT Services
- Sound, Video, Office Equipment & Electronics
Maintaining relationships with up to 20 National Sport Organizations (50% summer, 50% winter), including:
- Development and monitoring of Games’ Technical Packages;
- Games-time Major Officials (numbers, travel);
- Sport schedule development, maintenance, and approvals;
- Compiling and tracking Canada Games alumni statistics post-Games;
- Determining and monitoring Canada Games records;
- Monitoring venue and equipment standards;
- Establishing sport-specific equipment transportation limits for teams.
- Managing the Council’s Apprentice Coach programs;
- The monitoring, publication, and advancement of the Council’s participant database.
The Coordinator will assist in the following:
- Maintaining relationships with multi-service sport organizations;
- Sport selection process;
- Developing Sport Committee minutes, materials, and materials management;
- Supporting the work of the Host Societies in other operational areas as required.
The position will require occasional travel to Games’ sites.
Participate as a member of the Canada Games Council Mission operations at the Games.
Assume other duties as defined by the Director of Sport.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- A working knowledge of the Canadian sport system and the Canada Games;
- The ability to work well in a team environment but also be able to work independently on projects;
- A post-secondary education, preferably in Sports Administration/ Management;
- A minimum 2 years experience in event or games management and/or sport management (e.g. MSO, NSO, PSO, etc...);
- Knowledge in various areas of Games Operations such as: Logistics, Sport Operations, Venues and Volunteer Services; with specific emphasis on Information Technology (IT) and/or Project Management being extremely valuable;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (in both official languages is highly desirable);
- Demonstrated good judgment in decision-making and problem-solving skills;
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work within a multi-tasking environment;
- Strong computer skills (knowledge of Microsoft Access and Excel is essential).
Education - Undergraduate degree
Experience - Two years related experience
