This May long weekend, Nanaimo will host some of the best mountain bike athletes in British Columbia. Nanaimo is the second stop in the BC Cup Mountain Bikes series, with the X-Fusion BC Cup Weekend featuring the Turner DHR Downhill Race and the Pivot Mach 5 Cross Country Race.
The downhill racers will be flying down a challenging course with many rocks, logs and bridges chasing ponits to become the BC Cup Champion. The race venue, which Island Timberlands has allowed organizers to use, is located off of Nanaimo Lakes Rd and will see upwards of 300 athletes. Training for the event will be held on May 21 and the morning of May 22, with the actual event taking place on the afternoon of the 22 with participants being shuttles up the course with vehicles supplied by National Car and Truck Rental. This event is open to everyone who holds a Cycling BC racing license or an out of province equivalent, but a one day license can be purchased for those individuals who do not want to chase points for the BC Cup Series.
Cross-country racers will tackle a challenging multi lap course that should take the Pro/Elite races a little over two hours to complete. Racing starts at 10:30 on May 23 for those not chasing BC Cup points and is open to any person who holds a Cycling BC license or out of province equivalent; individuals may also purchase a one day license for this event as well. This course consists of a arduous climb with a thrilling descent on some legendary Nanaimo trails.
A great deal of the course maintenance has been performed by the staff and volunteers from Oak Bay Bikes Nanaimo, they have ensured that the course will be safe, while maintaining the challenging aspects of the course. Many of the athletes will be staying at the Coast Bastion Inn, which is the official race hotel and moments from the event venue.
Events like this would not be possible with out volunteers and for each volunteer that helps with marshaling, driving shuttles and registration, the event organizers will donate $15 to the Runner's of Compassion Nanaimo Chapter.
