May 9/12 17:26 pm - Barrie Conrod Memorial Ride Planned (Ontario)

Posted by Editoress on 05/9/12

The Waterloo Cycling Club is holding a memorial ride for local rider Barrie Conrod, who was struck and killed last Sunday, while on a ride with his wife. He leaves behind his wife and three children.

The ride will be held on Sunday, May 13th. We’ll be meeting at 3:00 pm at Countryside Mennnonite church (on Hergott Road just as you get to Hawksville).

We’re hoping we have a good turnout that is positive, respectful, and supportive. Although we are all interested in the Share The Road theme, we will be careful not to make political statements at this event.

We will not be riding quickly. Rather, this ride will be a somber procession at about 15kph to show our respect. This will also ensure that we can have one continuous procession that can include riders of all ability levels (even casual recreational riders and seniors). We are contacting police to arrange their participation (either to marshall the procession or to direct traffic).

Recycle Cycle has already prepared a ghost bike which will be set up on the route when we arrive at the site of the accident.

All riders will wear white T-shirts. This will make a dramatic show of solidarity in the community. Please do not wear club colours.

Please pass the word out to your cycling friends and anyone who you think would be interested in coming out to join us in showing our support.

Here is a map of the proposed route (subject to approval/change)

Send questions to mel@melroman.net and afrancq@uwaterloo.ca.
