Registration is now open for pro/am cyclists and teams for the seventh annual Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove, to be held Friday-Sunday on August 3-5, in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village.

The Tour of Elk Grove's total prize purse for pro races is more than $80,000, with $49,500 in total prize money earmarked for the men's Pro three day, three stage tour.  And back again will be the three day, three stage women's pro race that was first introduced in 2011. The prize purse for this tour is $20,000.

In addition, Tour of Elk Grove has been upgraded to Category 2.1 race designation in 2012 by the UCI. This upgrade is expected to draw even more international participants to Elk Grove.

Also: The Elk Grove-headquartered Heart of A Marine Foundation, which works with U.S. military vets, will again host Elk Grove's "adaptive athlete" race on Sunday. There will be one race for novice adaptive athletes, and a second for expert adaptive athletes with $10,000 in prize money.

Tour of Elk Grove features a total of 16 amateur and professionally-designated races and is again on USA Cycling's prestigious National Racing Calendar.

Among Tour of Elk Grove's highlights:

• The weekend of racing kicks off late Friday afternoon with a 4.5-mile time trial race for both men and women. (The time trials are Stage 1 of both the men's and women's pro 3-day, 3 stage races.)
• The Stage 2 road race for pro men and Stage 2 circuit stage for pro women will be held on Saturday afternoon.
• The Stage 3 circuit race for pro men and Stage 3 criterium race for pro women will be held on Sunday afternoon.
• The returning Men's Elite Category 1/2 races will be held Saturday and Sunday and features a total of $7,500 in prize money.

Tour of Elk Grove also features a time trial for charity on Friday at 3:45 p.m., two community races on Sunday, a sports expo with food and other vendors, and community "block parties" both Friday and Saturday nights with food, fireworks and live music.
