Local Riders Win Provincial Titles at Track Cycling Championships: Maggie Coles-Lyster Brings Home Five Medals
The Provincial Track Cycling championships in Victoria this past weekend saw 13 year old Maple Ridge resident Maggie Coles-Lyster, racing for her home team Local Ride Dr. Vie Superfoods+. She brought home four Gold, and one Silver, medals.
“It was an amazing experience. I raced as hard as I could, and it paid off”, Coles-Lyster says of her U-15 provincial championship titles. “I love each race, but especially the ones that contain elements of both endurance and sprinting”.
The Provincial Track Championships in Victoria BC, were held on an outdoor velodrome and consisted of approximately 10 races over three days. Track cycling is a great way to develop confidence and skills for both young and old cyclists. It helps riders improve speed, strength and race tactics.
Melanie Von Stetten, another development rider racing for the Maple Ridge based team, also took home two Elite Provincial titles; one in the Individual Pursuit and the other in the Omnium event. Melanie is in her first year of elite competition, and has shown tremendous progression this season.
“Developing women’s cycling is one of our foremost goals”, comments team manager Barry Lyster, “so we are delighted to see such success.”
Gillian Carleton, recent Olympic medalist and member of Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ race team, was also there on the weekend. Although she was not competing, she was busy signing autographs and showing off her 2012 Olympic Team Pursuit bronze medal in track cycling. She also presented medals to the winners of each championship, an example to young riders of the success hard work and dedication can bring.
