What was only a rumour early today is now confirmed - the UCI will have some top riders wearing GoPro helmet cams in Saturday's Downhill Final. According to the UCI, this does not go against their rules - the regulations allow cams for TV production.
At the DH managers meeting earlier today, teams were approached about using the cams, with the understanding that they would get recognition in the broadcast, and they could use other footage 24 hours after the Red Bull broadcast. A number of teams have already said yes. The footage will be used in the post-race highlights. The recent British Cycling ban on helmet cams will also not be a problem, since the federation has since reversed their stance, saying more study is needed.
The UCI will also be trying out the same idea in the cross-country on Sunday. The teams haven't been asked yet, and they are not expecting top riders to participate. They are hoping some other riders will, though, providing a look from within the field.
