Once again, Albstadt is proving to be a hard, hard course. Canada had three top-20 results in the first day of cross-country competition, with Junior man Marc-Andre Fortier (Team Canada) matching his 19th place from the week before in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic, and Maghalie Rochette (Luna) making it into the top-15, at 14th in Under-23 women. Haley Smith (Norco Factory) also had a good ride in Under-23 women, finishing 19th after riding in the top-15 mid-race.
Marine Lewis (Team Canada) couldn't match her top-20 ride from a week earlier in the Junior women's race, finishing 31st. In the Junior men, Marc-Andre had a really good start, moving into fourth on the first lap, but may have gone out too hard in the opening laps, as he faded in the latter half of the race. Felix Burke and Felix Belhumeur finished 63rd and 64th, respectively.
In the Under-23 women, Rochette had a much stronger start than the week before, to settle into 14th by the end of the first lap. She faded a bit mid-race before regaining her position on the final lap. Smith also had a strong start, but couldn't maintain her pace in laps four and five, just managing to hold on for a top-20 result. Rachel Pageau (Team Canada) moved up steadily all race, from the 40s on the first lap to 29th by the finish. National champion Frederique Trudel (Team Canada) had a strong start, riding in the low 20s for the first half of the race, but faded slightly in the second half to finish 32nd. Laura Bietola (Team Canada) and Andreane Lanthier-Nadeau (Team Canada) both did not finish.
