The 11th Annual "Kawartha Lakes Classic" is a charity cycling tour on Saturday, August 30th, hosted by the Kawartha Cycling Club.
All proceeds from the Classic will benefit A Place Called Home in Lindsay, Ontario, a charitable, non-profit organization that has been providing 24/7 support services to the homeless, and those at risk of becoming homeless, for more than 18 years. It operates a 19-bed emergency shelter for youths, adults, couples and families, including meals, laundry facilities and the counseling needed to find permanent housing and help break the cycle of homelessness.
Five route distances are offered - 13, 25, 50, 100, and 160 kilometres, starting and finishing at the Fenelon Falls Community Centre, 27 Veteran's Way. The scenic routes have been chosen keeping riders' different capabilities in mind, but always with an emphasis on fun. The 13 kilometre route is ideal for families and is an out and back ride on the hard packed Victoria Rail Trail (suitable for all bikes) out of Fenelon Falls along the shore of Cameron Lake. The 25 kilometre route also follows the rail trail out of Fenelon Falls continuing on paved roads before returning on the rail trail. The 50/100/160 kilometre rides all follow the 50 kilometre route with additional loops to reach the longer distances. All rides return via the hard packed Victoria Rail Trail. The rides are designed to allow riders to make mid-course decisions on distance as the day progresses.
All routes are well marked with rest stops providing refreshments and roving support vehicles for first-aid and mechanical help. Entrants will celebrate the finish with a well-deserved post-ride lunch and prizes. Chair massages will be available after the ride.
Start time for the 100/160 kilometre routes is 8:00 a.m. Start time for the 13/25/50 kilometre routes is 9:30 a.m.
Online registration at kawarthacyclingclub.com is $50 for adults until August 25th at midnight / $30 for youths 16 and under. On-site registration the day of the event will also be available for an additional $10 (cash or cheque only please) beginning at 7:00 a.m.
All online registrants will receive a cycling grab bag.
Please mark August 30th on your calendar and come out to join us for a good cause: helping to break the cycle of homelessness in our community.
