The Canadian women's elite road team were all caught in the massive crash on lap two of the road race today at the world championships in Ponferrada, Spain. The team will be issuing an official statement and update on the condition of the Canadian riders, but this is what we know so far:
Karol-Ann Canuel - broken pelvis, will require a few days in hospital to stabilize
Leah Kirchmann - broken collarbone, released
Lex Albrecht - elbow injury, extent unknown, although she did race two more laps and did not go to hospital
Joelle Numainville - uninjured
None of the injuries is of a critical nature.
The crash, which involved approximately 30 riders, was on a straight, fast section of the final downhill, and appears to be a case of a rider losing control and then a cascading series of crashes.
