The Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal (GPCQM), organizers of the Canadian WorldTour races, have announced that they are cancelling the Cyclos La Québécoise et La Montréalaise after two years of operation.
The organizers stated that they have been unable to attract the number of participants required to make the events financially viable. To cover the costs of running the events they require approximately 4500 participants, however, only 1700 entered in the 2014 edition.
The GPCQM pointed to an increase in the number of cyclosportifs held in Quebec and the late timing of the WorldTour events, which has the cyclosportifs taking place shortly after the end of the summer period and the beginning of the school year.
The organizers also stated their intention to continue supporting cycling domestically, and are working with the FQSC (provincial federation) to develop events for youth cycling.
