Bad news race fans, the green flag on the first-ever Speedway Cross cyclo-cross race in Niagara will have to wait.
The unique spring event was scheduled to be held April 4th at Merrittville Speedway, an historic dirt oval motorsports track in the Niagara Region. Unfortunately, like much of Southern Ontario, the City of Thorold has been hammered by snow this winter, burying the oval track under three feet of snow.
With less than three weeks to go before the race, the temperatures being forecast don't look good. The warm temperatures last week helped melt some of the snow, but the result is massive frozen lakes at the track.
As much as we don't want to have to cancel the first-ever Speedway Cross, we can't race at a venue that isn't available to us.
So, with that, we'll postpone the race until the fall, when we're hoping to have it added to the more traditional cyclocross schedule in Southern Ontario. Anyone who registered for the spring event already will have the option of a full refund, or putting their entry on hold for the fall race, when registration fees will remain the same.
Watch for more information on a future Speedway Cross date later this spring.
