The 2016 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic, opened on Wednesday evening with the fan-favourite Eliminator (XCE). Both defending champions retained their titles, with Linda Indergand of Switzerland took the women's title, while Daniel Federspiel of Austria took the men's.
The XCE is the newest discipline to cross-country. First held at the world championships in 2012, this is a short course event (usually under two minutes for a lap), with riders racing in heats of four around an obstacle course. The top two advance from each heat to the next round, until the final four race for the title. Titles are awarded for men and women, and it is open to all age categories. At Nove Mesto, the XCE course incorporates portions of the cross-country circuit, including a rock garden and a short climb.
Sixteen women qualified for racing, with Indergand qualifying first, followed by former world champion Alexandra Engen (Sweden). For the Final, Indergand was joined by Kathrin Stirnemann (Switzerland), Ramona Forchini (Switzerland) and Ingrid Boe Jacobsen (Norway). Engen was knocked out in the semi-finals, eventually finishing sixth overall. Indergand, Stirnemann and Forchini made it a clean sweep for Switzerland on the podium, in that order.
"To win is never easy, but I am also quite happy for Kathrin and Ramona," said Indergand. "It is great that we are all three on the podium. We had no team tactics, each of us wanted to go as fast as possible. I saw after the Rock Garden that I had a gap and got through. Before the competition, I was pretty relaxed. I knew to be a champion, you have to beat me only once. The second gold in the sprint I am pleased about, because it is mega-difficult to defend this title."
The men's competition had 32 qualifiers, led by Daniel Federspiel as the fastest qualifier. The Austrian was joined in the Final by number two qualifier Fabrice Mels (Belgium), number three qualifier Simon Gegenheimer (Germany) and the fourth fastest qualifier, Emil Linde (Sweden). As he was through every heat leading to the Final, Federspiel was unstoppable in taking the men's title, ahead of Gegenheimer and Mels.
"It was my main goal for this season and I am happy to achieved it," said Federspiel. "I felt pretty good. I was able to make an attack after the last technical part to open a gap. Nove Mesto is my favorite track, even if I have never won here before. It's a completely fair track. I had a gap on the finish straight and already could enjoy the title."
