January 19/17 11:51 am - Trek Issues Voluntary Recall of 720 Disc Bikes & 24-spoke Wheels

Posted by Editor on 01/19/17

In a coordinated effort with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Trek is issuing a voluntary recall of model year 2015, 2016, and 2017 Trek 720 Disc bicycles as well as Bontrager Approved TLR Disc 700C 24H front and rear wheels. This recall was prompted by the discovery that a limited number of bicycles were made with wheel sets that exhibit a higher rate of spoke breakage. A broken spoke on the front wheel could engage with the brake caliper, causing the bicycle to stop suddenly. Upon discovery, the company immediately contacted the CPSC to begin the process of the recall action it announced January 19th. The recall affects 1,529 bikes located throughout the world. Approximately 160 bicycles and 40 wheels were sold in Canada.

This recall involves model year 2015, 2016, and 2017 Trek model 720 Disc bicycles and Bontrager Approved TLR disc 700C 24H Front and Rear Wheels with silver spokes. Trek's model 720 Disc have a lightweight aluminum frame and vibration-damping carbon fork. The bicycle models were sold in 49 through 61 cm frame sizes. "Trek" is printed across the bicycle frame. The model number can be found on the down tube. The aftermarket wheels are marked "Bontrager TLR" on the rim, and will have 24 silver spokes.

Trek has received reports of 10 incidents where either the wheel spoke contacted the bike's brake caliper or the spokes broke at the hub. There has been one reported injury involving a broken vertebra.

Trek is taking proactive measures to bring attention to this issue by reaching out through its global network of authorized retailers. As part of this voluntary recall, Trek will provide free replacement wheels through its authorized retailers. To incentivize owners to return them, Trek will issue a $100 coupon to each owner of an affected product who participates, good toward any Trek or Bontrager merchandise through December 31, 2017.

Authorized Trek retailers have been notified of the issue, and replacement wheels are currently available. Owners of the affected models can expect fast service and replacement parts.
