May 27/18 22:58 pm - Winston-Salem Criterium, Pier-Andre Cote 2nd

Posted by Editoress on 05/27/18

A day of turbulent weather at the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic made way for ferocious racing on one of the most challenging race courses on the Series calendar. ISCorp Pro Cycling took over the D1 Team leader position for the pro women, while Holowesko | Citadel p/b Arapahoe Resources held onto their lead in the pro men’s field. Samantha Schneider (ISCorp Pro Cycling) sprinted her way to the race win and the Colavita Leader Jersey. John Murphy (Holowesko | Citadel p/b Arapahoe Resources) maintained his current lead in the individual competition.

In its sixth year in downtown Winston-Salem, the event not only features the second stop of the USA CRITS Series, but also one of only two UCI Category 1.1 races held in the United States and is also part of the USA Cycling Pro Road Tour (PRT). Saturday’s racing brought high levels of competition as the existence of the UCI road race garnered additional international teams into the criterium mix.

The pro women’s race was strung out from the start as riders drove the pace on the race course which was wet and slick from earlier thunderstorms. With a field of 112 riders, within several laps the field whittled down as racers navigated the quick twists and turns, ups and downs.

A late solo attack by Lily Williams (Hagens Berman | Supermint) would be the only one of the day to escape where she would take home the Gambler Prime. But Williams would be caught on the final lap and Schneider was victorious in a field sprint over Arlenis Sierra (Astana Women’s Team) in second and U.S. National Criterium Champion Erica Allar (Rally Cycling) in third.

Allar took over the lead in the Bandit Competition as the highest place non-D1 Team rider. A tie occurred in the FSA Fastest Lap competition between Sierra and Alison Jackson (Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank).

For the pro men, a four-man breakaway would escape a charging peloton with Maxx Chance (303 Project), Eder Frayre (Elevate-KHS Pro Cycling), John Murphy (Holowesko | Citadel p/b Arapahoe Resources), and Ty Mager (Rally Cycling). It would come back together, and Rally Cycling controlled the field for the sprint setting up Colin Joyce (Rally Cycling) for the victory, with Canada's National Criterium Champion, Silber Pro Cycling's Pier-Andre Cote taking 2nd.
