Cycling Canada held their Annual Meeting in Ottawa on October 12-14 at the Alt Hotel, where the provincial cycling federations met with the national body to discuss policy and best practices, as well as administrative issues (licencing, insurance), events, high performance and development programs, Committee elections and finances. (financial statement below)
The national federation has gone through some tumultuous times in the past year, with both the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technical Officer leaving the organization, financial management issues, and senior staff restructuring. Recently, the organizational structure at the senior level has been revised [see Cycling Canada Announces New Management Structure], and new members joined the Board [see Cycling Canada Announces New Board of Directors. The federation will also begin the process of determining a replacement for President John Tolkamp, who will step down by next February after ten years as the President.
Cycling Canada can point to a very successful year on the sporting side, with multiple medals at the Para, Mountain Bike and Road World Championships, as well as the Pan Am Track Championships.
Financially, the federation has seen revenue triple over the last decade, reaching nearly $10 million over the past two years. For the fourth year, the federation recorded a deficit, reaching a high of over $400,000 in 2017/18, as a result of the decision to invest in road cycling, despite a lack of dedicated funding. The projected 2018/19 budget has a surplus of over $100,000, as the federation works to replenish its reserve.
