The B.C, provincial government announced on July 27th that they were increasing the incentives to British Columbia residents to purchase e-bikes. The Ministries of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, and Transportation and Infrastructure, will be offering cash rebates to consumers and businesses to purchase new e-bikes. The provincial government is investing $4 million to the program over the next two years.
"The popularity of e-bikes is on the rise and our government wants to encourage more people to purchase and ride these bikes," said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. "That's why we are boosting the e-bike rebates for people and businesses. E-bikes are a much cheaper alternative to cars and are a safe way to travel. We look forward to seeing more people using e-bikes for getting around."
Consumers will be eligible for a rebate of $1050 towards the purchase of a new e-bike, an increase of $200 over the previous incentive. There is a catch: the rebate is only available with the trade-in of a motor vehicle. The rebate is delivered through the Scrap-It transportation options program.
Businesses can receive a rebate of up to $1700 (one-third of the purchase price) towards the purchase of a cargo e-bike. This rebate does not require a vehicle trade-in and businesses can use it to purchase up to five e-bikes (that meet requirements). However, there are only two models that currently meet the criteria, both produced by the company Rad Power Bikes - the RadBurro and RadWagon.
The consumer e-bike rebate can be accessed through the Scrap-It transportation options program.
The cargo e-bike rebate can be accessed through the Plug In BC SUVI (Specialty Use Vehicle Incentives) program.
