January 20/21 13:02 pm - Applications Open for 2021 BC High Performance Training Group

Posted by Editoress on 01/20/21

Cycling BC, in partnership with Cycling Canada, is excited to introduce a new program and initiative to support the continuing development of athletes who are beyond the junior age group and to help them reach their full athletic potential. The BC High Performance Training Group will support and bridge U23/Senior athletes as they progress toward Team Canada aspirations.

The program is modelled on the Ontario Cycling Association and Cycling Canada Training Group which was launched in the fall of 2020 in Milton, Ontario. The BC program was designed in consultation with personnel from Cycling Canada, Cycling BC, The Burnaby Velodrome Club, and the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific to help address existing sport system gaps, maximize resources, and clarify the athlete development pathway.

The Cycling Canada - Cycling BC High Performance Training Group will provide identified athletes with additional training opportunities including coached on-track sessions, athlete-led on and off-road group rides, educational workshops, strength and conditioning training, health assessments, and social activities. These opportunities aim to develop a complete athlete both on and off the bike.

The program is intended to provide additional opportunities for identified athletes, not as a replacement for existing club and personal coaching programs. The High Performance Training Group will offer a flexible training schedule to support high performance athletes from all cycling sports and to accommodate athlete work/school commitments. While the program’s primary focus will be U23/Senior athletes tracking towards national team programming, it is not exclusive. Athletes of all cycling disciplines are encouraged to apply (eg. Track, Road, MTB, BMX, Para, Cyclocross).

The application deadline for the 2021 program is Friday, January 22, 2021. Athletes will be notified over the weekend on their selection, with a virtual orientation to the program taking place on Monday, January 25th from 6-7 pm PST. The first on-track session will be held on January 26th from 9AM - 11AM PST. More details, including the meeting link, will be sent to applicants selected to the program.
