Van Vleuten wins 9th edition for women
After successfully attacking on the Knokteberg, Van Vleuten and Niewiadoma entered the final straight together with a small gap on a chase group. The leading duo successfully defended their small lead and sprinted for the win. European champion Van Vleuten was the strongest in the sprint and Niewiadoma's teammate Ryan completed the podium.
Despite several attempts, no lead group was able to form in the first hours of racing. The peloton had grouped on the first slopes of the day. On the Kortekeer it was Longo Borghini who put the rest of the bunch under pressure and ensured a first selection. With about 50 km to go, Trek-Segafredo took up the challenge and set the pace.
In the run-up to the Knokteberg, about 35 km from the finish, a lead group of 6 formed, including French champion Cordon Ragot (Trek-Segafredo), Thomas (Movistar Team Women), Jackson (Liv Racing), Van de Velde (Jumbo-Visma Women Team), De Jong (Bingoal Casino-Chevalmeire) and Rüegg (Stade Rochelais Charente-Maritime Women Cycling). Their attack did not go far, because once on the Knokteberg, European champion Van Vleuten (Movistar Team Women) and Niewiadoma (Canyon // SRAM Racing) accelerated.
The duo quickly took a few seconds and as the attack seemed to be the winning one. In the peloton, Trek-Segafredo again took responsibility, but closing the gap was no longer possible. Van Vleuten and Niewiadoma maintained their small lead at a maximum of 24 seconds and drove on to the final straight together. Van Vleuten started the sprint from far out and from the front. Niewiadoma initially seemed to be able to be overtaking, but a strong Van Vleuten was able to hold off her competitor.
The European champion took the victory in the 9th edition of Dwars door Vlaanderen for women, ahead of Niewiadoma. Alexis Ryan, teammate of Niewiadoma, won the sprint for second place in the peloton a handful of seconds after the winner.
Alison Jackson (Liv Racing) was in the group of 12 chasers and finished 5th.
