Jackson Goldstone (Miranda Factory) of Squamish, BC, was the top Canadian rider on Saturday at the first round of the Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup in Leogang, Austria, finishing second in the Junior men's race. Finn Iles was 14th in Elite men.

The site of last year's world championships, and a regular stop on the DH World Cup circuit, Leogang became the first round after the cancellation of Fort William and the postponement of Maribor to later in the season.
Goldstone finished just over half a second behind winner Pau Busquets (Commencal 21) of Spain. Two other Canadians qualified for the Final, with Tristan Lemire (Commencal/Muc-Off by Riding Addiction) finishing 16th and Drew Mozell 22nd. Coen Skrypnek and Jakob Jewett (Canyon Collective Factory) did not qualify for the Final.
Camille Balanche (Dorval AM Commencal) of Switzerland beat Austrian favourite Valentina Holl (RockShox Trek) in the elite women's race, after Holl crashed while in the lead. Canada's only entry, Rachel Pageau, did not qualify for the Final.

In the elite men, Troy Brosnan (Canyon Collective Factory) took the first win of the World Cup season, over a second in front of Thibaut Daprela (Commencal/Muc-Off by Riding Addiction). Iles had qualified sixth but could only manage 14th on the final run. Mark Wallace (Canyon Collective Factory) was 18th. Two other Canadians made the Final - Elliot Jamieson (Norco Factory Team DH) in 46th and Lucas Cruz (Norco Factory Team DH) in 53rd place.

"It's honestly so crazy. After qualifying I felt so confident and happy. It's good to be back on the pace. That run felt so good, I was just so pinned and trying to attack the bottom. I'm so stoked, but I don't want to get ahead of myself. There's a little bit more on the line now, I guess," said Brosnan.
