The Alberta Velodrome Association (AVA) is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead the operations of the world-class Velodrome located at the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. This world-class facility, set to open in October 2025, is designed to serve as a hub for cycling in Western Canada catering to programs and events for all ages and capabilities, from beginners to high-performance athletes. The General Manager will play a crucial role in establishing the Velodrome as a premier destination for cycling, ensuring operational excellence, and fostering a vibrant cycling community.

Key Responsibilities


Strategic Leadership & Management: Working with the AVA Board of Directors, develop and execute strategic plans to promote the Velodrome's mission and objectives, ensuring sustainable growth and community impact.
Operations Management: In cooperation with the City of Edmonton and the overall operations of the Coronation Recreation Centre, the GM will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Velodrome, including facility maintenance, scheduling, and event planning, to ensure a safe, welcoming, and high-functioning environment.
Program Development & Management: Design and implement cycling programs that cater to all levels and age groups. Ensure programs are inclusive, accessible, and designed to build the community, fostering growth from beginners to high-performance athletes.
Community & Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with the cycling community, local schools, sports organizations, sponsors, city officials and governmental bodies to ensure ongoing support for the Velodrome and its related events and activities.
Event Organization & Management: Spearhead the organization and execution of events, from fun learn to ride programs to prestigious UCI sanctioned competitions, ensuring they meet the highest standards of excellence. Ensure comprehensive planning, coordination, and regulatory compliance with local, provincial, national, and international bodies.
Partnerships & Sponsorship: Foster strong partnerships with sponsors, volunteers, and the local community to ensure activities and events are well-supported and leave a lasting positive impact. Ensure that events serve to promote the sport of cycling, enhance the visibility of the Velodrome, and provide an inclusive platform for all levels.
Financial Management: In cooperation with the AVA Board, manage the budget, financial planning, and resource allocation to ensure financial health and sustainability.
Team Leadership & Development: Lead, recruit, and develop a high-performing team of Velodrome staff and contracted coaches, committed to operational excellence and delivering exceptional experiences for all users of the Velodrome.
Marketing & Promotion: Manage the development and implementation of marketing strategies to promote the Velodrome and its programs, enhancing visibility and engagement.

Qualifications

Mandatory
• Experience: Minimum of 3 years in a leadership role within the sports or recreational facility management sector.
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Business Administration, or related field.
• Skills: Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. Strong financial acumen and the ability to manage complex budgets. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
• Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of the cycling industry and the operational requirements of sports and recreation facilities.
• Personal Attributes: Passionate about cycling and sports development, with a commitment to promoting inclusivity, health, and wellness. A visionary leader who is adaptable, innovative, and able to inspire others.

Preferred
• Experience: 5 years in a leadership role within the sports or recreational facility management sector, with a strong preference for candidates with experience in cycling program development and facility operations.
• Education: Professional certifications relevant to sport or project management would be an asset.
• Knowledge: Familiarity with the technical aspects of velodromes, cycling and triathlon is highly desirable.

Additional Requirements
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, to support events and programs.
• A clear criminal record check.
• Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
