California Race Report

Here is the race report from today's (February 12th) balmy race in LA California.

Without a cloud in the sky and the thermometer hitting 30 degrees (or 85 as they call it down here), 120 riders took the line for the Roger Millikan Memorial Crit just outside of Long Beach, California. I thought I was showing up to another local training race but the looming Tour of California brought out a good number of pro riders including the new and stacked United Pro Cycling Team. The 1.2 km loop featured 600m of climbing to the finish and a light twisting decent. Despite the course profile, we managed to hold a whopping 47km/h for the 90min race. With five laps to go I found myself in a a break with five of the top riders including Kyle Gritters (HealthNet), the 2005 US Espoir National Champion, and thought I had it made when we quickly got a 200m gap on the rest of the field. Other teams wouldn't have it though and reeled us in to let the United Pro Cycling men hammer out their leadout for the win.
