Death at Gent Six Day

Madison World Champion Isaac Galvez of Spain died last night after a crash during the madison event on the fifth night of the Belgian six day race in Gent. Galvez collided with Belgian rider Dimitri DeFauw and subsequently hit the side railing on the track. He was immediately knocked unconscious, but was revived by paramedics, only to succumb to his injuries on the way to the hospital. Racing was immediately cancelled.

Galvez was the current Madison world champion (with partner Juan Llaneras), and also won the title in 1999. On the road Galvez rode for Caisse d'Epargne, and finished second to Robbie McEwen in stage 12 of the Tour de France this year. He also won two stages of the Challenge Illes Balears in Mallorca and a stage of the Quatre Jours Dunkerque (Four Days of Dunkirk) and had a total of 12 victories for the season. Galvez had only recently gotten married.
