On a cool night with thunderstorms skirting the area, bright sunshine and dry roads greeted racers at Midweek Mayhem's 3rd race of the season. The sun was especially welcome after the snow and rain of Victoria Day in Calgary and the surrounding area! Ya, that's right... snow sticking on the ground for Victoria Day. Welcome to the Rocky Mountains!

The B's again had a race featuring an aggressive first half, settling down after the prime lap won by Mayhem rookie Jason Myslick (Ind.). After countering a solo attack by Noel Flatters (Calgary Cycle), Jason motored to the line well clear to take the points on offer. Jason is best known in athletic circles as a former member of Canada's national Nordic Combined team who participated in the Salt Lake City winter Olympics. The second half of the race was much calmer apart from a nice solo move by a Team H&R Block rider that was brought back after a lap or two. The field sprint was taken by another Mayhem rookie, Joel Regimbald, followed by Damon Davis, Stephen Davis (Bow Cycle/CMC), Paul Martin (Bow Cycle/CMC), and Myslick. Top female finisher was Lisa Mensink (Speed Theory), finishing with the main field.

The A race was another scorcher, with a group of 5 riding away early and staying away. Phil Abbott (Ital Pasta), Matt Usborne (Ind.), Dan Wood, Jeff Bolstad (Team H&R Block), and Cyrus Kangarloo (Team H&R Block) rolled away working well together. Usborne took the prime for 2 points, and lit it up in the sprint to the finish to take the 10 points for first. Bolstad narrowly took the second step on the podium by outthrowing Dan Wood on the line, with Kangarloo and Abbot rounding it out, all with the same time as Usborne.

In the overall standings after 3 races, Usborne (Ind. - 30) is well clear of Abbott (ItalPasta - 18) and Bolstad (Team H&R Block - 12). For the B group, Damon Davis (Ind. - 20) keeps the lead over Stephen Davis (Bow Cycle/CMC - 16) and Paul Martin (Bow Cycle/CMC - 14).

Racing continues next week at the University of Calgary Research Park. Sign-on at 6:30, racing at 7:00 for the B group, and the A's right after the B finish.
