The Bicycle Trade Association of Canada (BTAC) is pleased to announce the release of its first annual report on wholesale bicycle sales within the Independent Bicycle Dealer (IBD) sector of the Canadian bicycle industry.

Approximately 65% of IBD wholesale suppliers contributed monthly data (unit and dollar value) on 2006 sales, broken down by type of bicycle and wheel size. Using widely accepted statistics for the entire industry (Statistics Canada and Industry, it can now be stated that the IBD channel accounts for approximately 46% of dollar sales in the Canadian market ($148 million wholesale / $207 million retail), and 25% of unit sales (341,000 units).

This program was started by BTAC to address the serious lack of reliable, detailed and ongoing data for the bicycle industry in Canada." explains the Data Capture Program Director, Robert Jones. "It has taken a while to develop a regular reporting process, but now we will start reporting quarterly data to the program participants on an ongoing basis, which will enable them to quickly and efficiently track trends, and respond shifts in demand."

Janet O'Connell, Executive Director of BTAC, comments "We are very pleased with the initial response to this program, and expect more suppliers to come on board as we move forward. In addition to the important market information that this program provides to participants, it will assist BTAC to more effectively lobby government in our efforts to reduce tariffs on bicycles and support our environmentally friendly industry."

Program participants receive detailed monthly data, followed by a public release of the annual figures.
