Oh I am pretty excited to race my first cross race of the year. Practicing some skills in the park yesterday a guy playing Frisbee golf came up to me and asked, "Is it cross season again"? What a cool thing to happen in what is really a non-cycling town of Nanaimo......look forward to seeing you guys out on Monday!

With our first event of the 2007 Cross on the Rock Season coming up this Monday we have a few announcements.

As always feel free to forward this to all your cross or cross curious friends.....if they would like to receive e-mail updates get them to e-mail me to be put on the list.

1. VOLUNTEERS

As with all of the cross races in our series they do not happen without the help of volunteers. If you can lend a hand for set up on Sunday. Early set up on Monday. Helping with the Kids race. 2. FREE KIDS EVENTS

Island Multi-Sport Promotions is proud to be a sponsor of the Junior Cycling Festival Cyclocross race at Juan de Fuca Recreation Center. This event, organized by Elitewave.com, will feature races for all age groups and abilities. Kids from 6-16 will be involved in this inaugural event.

The idea behind the race is to promote cyclocross as one of the best avenues for getting kids involved in competitive cycling. Young riders will use mountain bikes or BMX style bikes to negotiate some of the same obstacles used in adult cyclocross races. The variety of terrain also allows riders of different skill and fitness levels to have a more equal playing field. The race will have age groups similar to many other youth sporting events (10&Under, 11&12, 13&14 and 15&16). Awards will be given to the top 3 male and female finishers in each category. There will also be participation ribbons for each competitor.

The organizer of the event, Dan Proulx, expects to have 30 or 40 young racers out for the first annual event. The course includes parts of the Victoria BMX track and the Juan de Fuca Velodrome. "We have a number of introductory cycling and triathlon programs for kids in the Victoria region. We also have strong youth programs in soccer, hockey, swimming and running. Cyclocross offers a chance for all of those kids to come together and participate in a new sport. It's a fun event that gives kids from many different backgrounds an equal chance of doing well. It's like Kids of Steel for bike racers!", says Proulx. The race will be held on Monday, October the 8th at 9am. The race is FREE. Parents simply need to email the organizer dan@elitewave.com to register. Island Multi-Sport will be sponsoring similar events throughout their Cross on the Rock Series. The races, held throughout the island, provide athletes of all ages with a rewarding and fun cyclocross experience.
